1 BARACK THE VOTE  Wed, Apr 20, 2011 10:11:41am
Anyone can be anyone on the Internet, and for many, anonymity offers a freedom and safety necessary for self-expression. But when someone deliberately misrepresents himself, because he claims his own adoring "invisible friend" is an "unbiased messenger," when he lies about who he is because it's "fun" playing the "vigilante," it's a profound statement of cynicism about the nature of online community and contempt for his readers. Adams is right when he says his actions were funny, but I doubt he meant they were so funny-strange, instead of funny-ha-ha. He did, however, get one thing right in all of this. Writing on the nature of his little sock puppet, he said Monday, "A hammer can be used to build a porch or it can used to crush your neighbor's skull. Don't hate the tool." Whether you're hated now for your ego and dishonesty is up for grabs, Scott Adams. But I'm glad we can all agree you're a total tool.

Great post. Thanks for paging it.

Mr. Chaos has apparently long been a fan of Adams; Gawker noted Monday that early this year, he was posting on Reddit that "It's fair to say you disagree with Adams. But you can't rule out the hypothesis that you're too dumb to understand what he's saying. And he's a certified genius." How fortunate for Adams there are people in the world not "too dumb" to understand the certified genius. It just happens that they're all Scott Adams. On Friday, the cartoonist admitted on MetaFilter that he and plannedchaos are one and the same. My tie! It's curving upward in astonishment!

Oh man, that is even more bizarre than any of his comments. What on earth? Sounds like some schrizophrenia.

3 Mostly sane, most of the time.  Wed, Apr 20, 2011 10:27:54am

Hmmm. On the one hand, sockpuppetry is a bad thing, and that comment is horribly bizarre.

On the other hand, his best engineer in his strip is clearly Alice, and his cartoons about maternity leave were hysterical.

Something isn't squaring up here. Did his girlfriend just leave him or something?

Yeah, I think he had a bad female experience of some kind.

His likening his situation to that of Marilyn Davenport is highly bizarre. I was a subscriber to Adams' newsletter for a long time and it was filled to the brim with him and readers making fun of forwarded messages just like Davenport's.

Great post. Thanks for paging it.

You're welcome—glad you liked it.

I know it shouldn't, but it still amazes me how many people feel they're so exceptional that they shouldn't be restricted by ethical considerations or notions of common courtesy like the rest of us mere mortals.

I can't imagine why she would since he seems so charming. //

I used to subscribe to it years ago too. Definitely bizarre behavior.

C Street and The Family!

...of which so many prominent politicians are members it'll plunge you into clinical depression :(

8 What, me worry?  Wed, Apr 20, 2011 11:16:32am

I'm just reading over the various posts linking to the Salon article.

Adams' lists circumcision as one of the many examples of unfair treatment towards men. You know that little ritual that happens to most men when they are approximately a week old? This guy needs a good dose of monthly cramping, bleeding, headaches, backaches, swelling and mood swings.... for 40 years.

I really can't believe that any man could have this level of hate for women just out of the blue or because he lost the love of his life. That doesn't square. This is deep seated, well thought out animosity that didn't grow overnight.

I like his comics, but he is a real moron/creep. I came to that realization when he was making creationist arguments on his blog a while back. When PZ Myers debunked it he was attacked by a huge group of fans. Besides the usual throngs of mindless followers, I'm not too surprised to find out that sock-puppetry may have been at work there too.

I really had no idea that Adams was such a douche.

I do wonder if much of this has been contrived by Scott himself.

How was he able to keep this hidden for so long?

I'm defending the guy- what he has said is pretty offensive no matter how you slice it. I just wonder if this isn't all some kind of contrived effort.

13 Shiplord Kirel  Wed, Apr 20, 2011 12:09:50pm

I might economize by using the same name for my sock puppet and my regular ID. Like most sycophants, the puppet will be devoted and fawning but not quite as bright as the object of its adoration. If you see something like:

SK is the greatest American since Winston Churchill

....that will be my sock puppet.

Of course, views change. Just look at Little Green Footballs. They usually change for the better, though.

As in... readership is low? He's doing the Donald "Get-Your-Name-Out-There-No-Matter-How-Much-Of-An-Ass-You-Make-Out-Of-Yourself" Trump?

hehe

Dilbert was never funny or insightful.

Your work experience is very limited, I think.

Dilbert is one of my favorites, for it's reality insights and wry humor. I find it very disappointing, and puzzling, that the author is some kind of savant asshole.

re: #18 Naso Tang

My thought as well. Even though it's been years since I worked, in IT even, often Dilbert causes mild PTSD flashbacks. The douchery and idiocy are way too recognizable.

Won't be reading any more though. I don't support douches.

I liked the cynicism, but it just is the same shit again and again, after a while the formula is chewed to death

Used to be a daily reader (and occasional commentator) on his blog; Adams can be fantasticly funny and/or insightful where he's not being a dickbag. Sadly, he's been sliding in the past year or so...but I had no idea it was this bad!
